The second generation of the 7 Series appeared in U.S. showrooms for the 1988 model year. The big news was the introduction of a 296-horsepower V-12 engine, a configuration that would become a trademark of the line. This generation also saw the introduction of a longer-wheelbase model, matching the offering of the Mercedes-Benz premium sedan line.

In 2002, BMW made a design U-turn, abandoning the classic styling cues that had long distinguished the brand in favor of what pundits described as a more conventional shape. When the faithful are devout believers, any departure from the true path can generate a critical response, so some Bimmer fans were very unhappy with the new sheetmetal. To this radical styling change add another game-altering move: the full adaptation of the I-Drive computer system. This innovative microprocessor-equipped device is in charge of climate control, audio, and the nav system--all by means of a single display. Many drivers have found it bewildering. And a long list of high-tech features caused some to wonder if an "ultimate driving machine' really needed so much electronic adornment.

But all can agree that today's premier BMW sedan delivers a superb driving experience. Its handing is arguably unmatched by any car in its segment, and the V-8 and V-12 engines deliver outstandingperformance through a six-speed automatic.

The 2013 BMW 7-Series is available in a wide range of models--and in two different sedan body styles. Models designated with an 'L' get five inches of additional wheelbase, most of which goes to additional back-seat legroom.
